Next International Winter Cycling Congress to be held in Karlstad, Sweden
Cycling is far superior to the car as an environmentally friendly mode of transportation, even in winter. Therefore, the theme of the 10th winter cycling congress is biking for health and sustainable cities. And today we can reveal that the host city for the 2023 congress will be Karlstad, Sweden!
Timo Perälä, president of the Winter Cycling Federation said:
“Winter Cycling Federation is extremely pleased to hold the conference for the first time in Sweden and to co-host it with the city of Karlstad. The work that the city has done to make it possible for everyone to cycle all the year round, has not gone unnoticed. We are certain to experience an inspiring and informative conference with a legacy. We can’t wait to exchange knowledge and experiences with the international audience arriving to Karlstad from all over the world. We urge everyone to save the date and to see you in Karlstad in 2023.”
Innovative method for de-icing of cycling paths
The city of Karlstad is looking forward to being the new host, and the preparations are already under way.
Monika Bubholz, town councilor in Karlstad said:
“We’re excited to show off our city and to share our experiences in the field of winter cycling. For example, we will talk about our innovative salt solution for sweep-salting, that is our method of using a front-mounted power broom for snow clearance and salt for de-icing. This unique blend was created in Karlstad to improve cycling paths but has practical applications beyond that.”
Detailed schedule to come
Now that the host city is chosen the task of appointing speakers and setting the schedule can begin properly. Next year’s conference will be held on 22-24 of February 2023. New speakers and events will be released regularly on the website karlstad.se/wcc2023.
About the Winter Cycling Congress
The international Winter Cycling Congress has been held since 2013 in cities all over the world. It’s been held in places such as Oulu (Finland), Leeuwarden (Netherlands), Minneapolis (USA) and Montreal (Canada). Due to the pandemic the congress was virtual in 2021 and cancelled in 2022.
The Winter Cycling Federation’s vision is “winter cycling for everyone” – a world where cycling all-year-round is seen as normal and practical, and where cycling is a viable transportation option for people of all ages and abilities.
